I forgot to add this bit of pondering my mind did on the lack of honesty and authenticity I see with so many marketers that appear to have arrived and are now considered successful, yet fail to share what it was that truly got them to rise above the fold and be seen by others as a success story.

Here goes:

Ever notice how whenever someone comes out with a new SECRET technique – whether they’re charging you for it or giving it away for free, that when YOU go to try it, it almost always bombs? Costing you time and money in the process too.

Seems like the technique worked for them in the past tense, now that it no longer produces, they can let the kitty out of the sack and share their ‘SECRET‘ with the world. Awww, how generous of ya. I guess that means you a good guy a me now follow you and give you money, okeedokie?

I think what the Secret Technique really is, is it’s just a leveraging tool for creating higher value for the person sharing it. It’s like,” Look – I know what I’m doing. I made bank on this little trick.” (Now, because it was a one time, one trick pony) I share it with everybody announcing my greatness to the world and by the way won’t you please pay attention to me? Me, a person who is successful and savvy. You’ll follow me now? Really? Great! Now check out all these offers I have to sell you! Ah yes, mo’money mo’money mo’money.

Seriously, think about it. If you fall upon a technique or manufacture one with some co-conspirators, you can now show off your paypal transactions and brag about your growing bank account that happened, ‘literally overnight while I was asleep‘. This will suddenly give you street cred and people will think you are on to something big. They buy in for however you package it. Your real money is now made on selling this ‘not-so-secret-anymore technique’ to the masses as well as building a HUGE email marketing list that a percentage will keep buying the next greatest thing you offer to them. Brilliant.

HOW THEY REALLY MAKE ALL THAT MONEY ONLINE

This is something that I believe needs to be brought up. I’m tired of seeing so much failure experienced by so many coupled with too much brewhaha and smoke and mirrors by the few who ARE making it.

It seems to me like there is a huge BRIDGE missing in the whole rags to riches stories that are out here in IM Land. Don’t you agree?

I mean, everybody I know (and plenty I don’t) who are ALREADY successful or at least BS-ing their success never seem to mention or acknowledge how or what it was that finally brought them up from the depths of homogenous moneyless amateurism to the sudden ability to make money on command. You know, where they already seem to have made it, claim to tell you how easy it is and how they can (for a price) show you how to do it too?

Funny thing is, every time you buy into one of these things, if you stop to pay attention, you’ll realize that the HOW they are making their money is by selling their story and maybe some techniques and tools along with it. That is NOT the same thing as how THEY made their first money.

Often, it’s claimed that it was a mental shift – a Mindset Change – if I may take liberty there. Like, “the day I decided to be a leader, I was a leader.” Seriously? Come on. I wasn’t born yesterday.

Ok, I’m not going to get all negative and Devon Downer on ya. I would like to see less hiding behind marketing hoopla and more authenticity. My two cents worth. Keep in mind that none of this will still not guarantee your success :

Luck

Persistance

Consistency

Motivation and Passion

Modeling the Right mentors

Money for tools, advertising, etc

I think advice like pretending to be successful is ingenuous and foolish. Better hope you make it before they peak behind the curtain. Not a good way to present yourself to the world.

By far the most annoying thing I find is those people who hook you with a product that may or may not be good and then you find them promoting a new different affiliate offer to you everyday till you unsubscribe. My god, if you multiply that by however many ‘guru’s email lists you subscribe to, you’ll be on the Information Overload Express Train to Crazy Town without a nickel to your name because you foolishly spent every cent on all these conflicting next best gotta-have things.

Phew! Ok, a bit discombobulated rant there but I’m sure I speak for the 1000s of frustrated marketers who are trying to figure out the missing link that separates the winners from everybody else.

If you ARE one of the success stories, why not take this as an opportunity to be a new STAND OUT guy or gal who tells it like it REALLY IS. Might make even more money while you are at it.

I’ve been busy on other projects so I apologize for not being more consistent on this blog.

Ok, so maybe that’s an exaggeration. He was actually offering advice to his son regarding his son’s music career, but it certainly can apply to our industry as well.

You’ve heard it so many times – one of the perks to running a network marketing business is the ability to work with just those you WANT to work with. However, that can tend to just be a catch phrase/sales pitch for those starting out or pushing to massively grow their current biz, who will go after anyone with a pulse who’s willing and able to give it a go in hopes they’ll be the next diamond in the rough. This goes against the whole idea of being selective in who you do business with and who you bring into your circle as a fellow partner or team member.

So, What about Willie’s advice for succeeding in the music [sub. Internet Marketing] business?

Surround yourself with family and friends and people that you trust and care about. Well, that goes against what us enlightened marketers tout – that being DON’T go after your ‘warm – usually HIGHLY UNTARGETED’ market. But it’s the second part of what he said that I thought was a keen insight:

Know yourself so that you can know other people. Know who you are, so when you’re seeing other people, you’re seeing from your own eyes. That allows you to really see who they are.

So there you have it. Know yourself first.Which, if you’ve been in this industry for any length of time, you probably have been on the track of personal growth and development for a while.

We live in a hyper-connected, tech-savvy world where information flows freely online. Everything – blog posts, status updates, photos, thoughts etc. – becomes our “Personal Brand Footprint” to the world. Anyone both within and beyond our network can see, review and form an opinion about us.

In this new Age of Transparency, social media blurs the lines about who we are to friends and family, peers, professional contacts and even those we do not know. Your personal brand is more important than ever.

Have you “Googled” yourself lately? If you haven’t, you may be in for a surprise.

You may think that you have control over your brand, but anyone anywhere can threaten the pristine image that you have taken years to establish with a negative post, embarassing photograph or unflattering article. Conversations are happening all over the Web without our even being aware of them. It’s the Wild, Wild West out there.

If you want to know what’s being said about you and monitor your brand online, then you need to have a tracking system. And you need to start listening.

Here are three tools you can begin using immediately to track and manage your online reputation:

1. Google Alerts (www.google.com/alerts)
Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results based on your choice of topic. Set a comprehensive alert for your name, company name, industry topic etc. and you’ll be notified through email and RSS.

2. Twitter (www.twitter.com)
Using the search tool in Twitter, you can locate any mentions of your name and/or Twitter handle (if you are already using the medium). Conduct a search for your name, Twitter handle (if it’s different than your name), company name and topics related to your industry.

3. Social Media Search (www.socialmention.com & www.howsociable.com)
Social Mention and How Sociable are social media search engines that search user-generated content such as blogs, comments, bookmarks, events, videos, news and microblogging services. They allow you to track mentions of your brand across all of these platforms.

I can’t take the credit for this bit of mindset training but I thought it was good enough to repost here for you to read:

From: ALPHA CODE by Joe Schroeder

Page #31

SILENT POWER is about being able to control yourself
physically and psychologically. And once you start to
master this skill of not projecting your fears and anxieties
onto other people, which breaks your own communion with
SILENT POWER, you begin to notice just how weakened
most other people are. Think about it.

Lose The Appearance of Concern and Struggle

Remember the intangible characteristic of the Alpha Gene:

It is to thrive beyond survival.

It’s an aura of absolute dominion and if people can even
grab a HINT of your fears, worry or struggle— poof!

You have been exposed as just a commoner and someone
NOT worth to follow.

The Anatomy of a “Thumb Sucker”

When most people are not worrying about dropping dead,
they are usually thinking about themselves, telling you
about their woes, preening and admonishing their egos
in their own futures, trying to impress upon you just how
special they are, or even worse, they are giving you a verbal
laundry list of everyone who has disappointed them recently
and/or telling you about all of the things that have gone
wrong in their lives since you last saw them.

The Death Rattle of the Little Guy, “Oh Poor Me!”

So in the end, what most people do, is they ask you
to notice them.

They expect you to acknowledge and observe them and if
you can, as they are dying, wrap your emotional arms
around them and hug them because they are on the
mouse-wheel of life and scared to death like a little rat.

Admit it, not only are people like that exhausting to listen
to, but also admit that you bump into people like this
virtually every day of your life!

Here’s the lesson. Learn this at all costs:

Step 1: All around you is an electromagnetic energy field.

Step 2: It’s an invisible “field” that surrounds your body
which is attached to the infinite.

Step 3: The ANCIENT Greeks called this the “Etheric”
(see Webster’s)

Step 4: The ETHERIC body is where “the real you” resides.

Step 5: Your ETHERIC BODY is speaking to people even
when your mouth is shut.

The Genetic Code

The Genetic Code says this:

In the jungle, all animals have this message embedded
into their brains and it is this:

“If you see a hurt or dying animal, go EAT IT and wash
the jungle clean of other beasts who can no longer
duplicate, thrive and help keep the natural balance
of the forest.”

That’s what the jungle code is.

“If you are dying or hurt, we will help you out of
your misery and eat you.”

That’s why tigers eat and kill their own wounded cubs.

People Who Complain Are Considered People Dying

Tip: Losers talk about what happened TO them and also they
talk about what happened to them yesterday. Winners, on the
other hand, only talk about WHERE they are going and about
being excited about TOMORROW. Never forget that.

The Silent Code and Hidden Order Within The Village

Amongst humans, the Genetic Code says this:

“Only weak and dying people complain.”

Therefore, to amass INSTANT SILENT POWER, all
you have to do is…

STOP COMPLAINING!

Besides, if you think about it, most people complain
about things which they permit anyway.

The next time one of your buddies is complaining,
just yawn and say:

“You can’t complain about that which you permit.”

That’ll shut-em-up! (wink)

What gives you INSTANT power and a strength that is
instantly recognized by others, as true strength, is this:

( 1 ) Stop Complaining: If you do, it signals to others a
silent death wish and no one feels safe around the hurt
or dying.

( 2 ) Never Tell People About Your Future: Those who do
are looking for others to validate their dreams and wishes
and it’s an obvious tip off that you yourself aren’t about
your future yourself.

( 3 ) Stop Asking People For Anything: Leaders ask very
little from other people except of course within their
own businesses and their own brain trust group.

In the Genetic Code, a person is programmed to resist
other people who psychologically LEAN on them.

Why?

Because to LEAN on others means you are dying and/or
weak and as any tribe will agree, those who are dying
need to be taken out into the field to die alone.

LEANING on others is what makes you instantly UN-Attractive.
Asking for other people to validate you, expecting them to listen
to your “war stories” and to expect other people to support
your inner pain is instant social suicide.

Don’t do it because when you lack this self discipline,
it appears as your “true self” in your etheric FORCE of
energy that surrounds you and everyone can pick up
on it whether you say anything or not.

As the cream rises to the top and we see a new batch of ‘gurus’ [cringing as I use that word], the newbies and not so newbies are missing the boat by focusing on the wrong things and going about this the wrong way by trying to emulate them when they don’t have the experience or clout to pull it off.

Sure, there’s a place for personal branding but what I’m seeing is little egos trying to be big, while other people’s objectives seem to be a desire to become the latest reality internet star. If that’s what they want and they’re just wanting attention, so be it. But if your goal is to build a long term sustainable business, then pay attention.

I’ve heard people call this erroneous concept Ego Branding marketing, where, let’s face it, most of us are coming across as lame, desperate, corny Gong Show rejects. It’s no wonder they’re not seeing duplication in their efforts and business – which from what I’ve seen, is a blessing in disguise. The medium where this is most apparent is obviously video marketing. By no means am I saying stay away from making a YouTube video for your business. What I am suggesting is that you understand the role it plays in your business before you hit record.

This ego branding is directly conflicting with the concept of ATTRACTION MARKETING. People come of as amateurish and NOT COMPELLING at all. Don’t get me wrong, stories are good and sharing yours is a part of the attraction process. Letting people get a taste of who you are and what you are about is what the attraction marketing part is. What most of this Ego Branding marketing is doing is REPELLING other people. You could almost say, the way ego marketing is being implemented by most people is the exact opposite of Attraction Marketing. Talk about self-sabotage of one’s business.

The goal is not to get EVERYONE in the world to follow you or join your tribe. You are only wanting those like minded souls you resonate with. Once that’s accomplished, let them know what you have to offer in the form of information, training and support – AKA, ‘if you want to work with me, or find out more, click here.’

That’s where your ego steps aside and you let the duplicatable marketing funnel/machine take over – you know, the part that everyone can do. . . the Tools that we all use – autoresponders, capture pages, marketing copy etc.

So remember, the object is to find like minded people who are seeking out information and partners to grow and prosper with, not attempt to vainly entertain or impress with your talents or lack thereof.

Parting thought: Targeted info in front of targeted eyeballs = successful business. Loverage + Leverage = Freedom

Making money really can be as simple as sending emails when you know what you are doing.

You need to understand the principle of ’CONGRUENCY’ & how absolutely important it is in your marketing.

Sometimes I see people writing all these elaborate things to their list, trying to sell like crazy, inserting phrases or statements or action steps that DON’T really support effortless ‘no friction’ buying by their prospects, and all sorts of other stuff.

Well, in short… STOP DOING THAT!

You are wasting your time, and weakening your power to market.

Your job as marketers is to make it as EASY as possible on your prospects, and to guide them along EACH step of the way.

FRICTIONLESS, BRILLIANT, is the feel you want for your marketing processes.

Here’s an email that PERFECTLY primes my prospects to take the action I want them to take… which is WATCH THE VIDEO.
I’m not asking them to buy, I’mnot selling them on the system…

I am ONLY leading them one step at a time.

The people who try to lead 5 steps at a time… are not as effective as those who know how to guide along EVERY step.

All we want our prospects to do here is WATCH the video… and it’s our job as marketers to prime them as much as possible to watch the video, but also be eager to buy what we’re offering.

Check out this email I recently sent my subscribers (if you are on my list, this might look familiar):

Hey Buddy,
This video is seriously AWESOME…

http://watchnow.mybeachbumbiz.com

Check this out. It’s a completely free 21 minute video revealing one of the “Secret Systems” my friend Jonathan has been using to generate 417+ leads DAILY for his business on the Internet.

That’s no small # right there.

It’s VERY difficult to explain how much money 417 leads daily is really worth to you…

But let me just tell you there’s basically an UNLIMITED amount of ways for you to profit in YOUR business from that many leads.

Building downlines, affiliate promotions, cross promotions, launches… you NAME it.

Anyways, here’s the video that explains everything…

http://watchnow.mybeachbumbiz.com

I highly recommend you watch the whole thing. The solution

provided at the end is seriously the “Next Level” of where things are going in our industry…

And a total KILLER way to grow your business on autopilot using the Internet.

Speak again soon…

Cheers,
Terry

P.S. haha, I found myself laughing at this video like a hyena. Some parts of Jonathan’s life were so depressing it’s now FUNNY. See…

http://watchnow.mybeachbumbiz.com

It captures their attention, it engages them with a HUGE benefit for their business, it ‘hints’ towards the secret system, it calls them to action to watch the entire video & get the “Next Level Solution” at the end…

Just keep in mind, when you are promoting your business, and anything else… to keep your marketing as CONGRUENT with the action steps you want people to take as possible.

Or put another way,

How To Craft Your Uniqueness Statement

[Thanks to SheBrand.com for this content - I felt that this article is very appropriate for our industry. Personal Branding or what sets YOU apart from every other marketer out there is critical to online success. If you don't differentiate yourself from the rest, then you'll be lost in the crowd and no one will pay much attention to you.]

The average person has an attention span of merely 15 seconds. You don’t have a lot of time when someone asks you the inevitable question, “What do you do?” In the personal branding process, it’s imperative to have a Uniqueness Statement that establishes rapport and sets you apart from the rest.

A Uniqueness Statement (often referred to as a Unique Selling Proposition or USP) is an opportunity to make an emotional connection with your target market by touching on the qualities and values that you stand for, and by highlighting the benefits that a potential client will receive by working with you. There’s nothing worse than being caught off guard when someone asks you about your work, or feeling unprepared or flustered, and not taking advantage of an opportunity to make a powerful connection.

A Uniqueness Statement will:

Increase your confidence when speaking about what you do

Help you present yourself with polish and professionalism

Build credibility

Differentiate you from the rest of the pack

Help build rapport with your prospect

Create excitement about your products and services

So how do you build a powerful Uniqueness Statement? Here are four steps to get you started:

Identify Your Target Market – Who are your clients? Who do you most want to be working with?

Communicate Your Area of Specialization – What is your “Zone of Genius?” What do you do better than anyone else?

Highlight the Benefits of Working With You – How have your clients benefited from working with you? What have they achieved as a result of your working together?

Motivate Them Into Action – After meeting you, how could they learn more about you or even work with you?

For example, you’re not just a fashion stylist. You help female executives over 40 build chic, well-curated wardrobes and present themselves with flair and confidence. Your last three clients purged half of their closets and now can’t wait to get dressed each morning. One of them received a promotion at work and another met her husband-to-be. Anyone can sign up on your website for your weekly tips on “How To Build A Wardrobe That You Love.”

Or, you’re not just an herbal acupuncturist, you help mothers between the ages of 35-55 who have struggled with chronic fatigue syndrome regain their energy and vitality through custom immune-building programs and treatments. Within six months, most of your clients have renewed energy and are sleeping better than they have in years. A recent client just climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro after battling chronic fatigue for more than 10 years. For more information and to get your article “Ten Tips For Increasing Your Energy TODAY,” potential clients can sign up at your website.

You get the idea. Anyone can be a doctor, lawyer, event planner, financial planner, personal trainer or freelance writer. But only you can be YOU – in all of your unique glory.

Much of the work in crafting your Uniqueness Statement is in practicing your message and perfecting its delivery. Remember, this is a living, breathing statement about who you are, so it’s going to be a work in progress and will evolve over time.

I know you’re wondering, so here’s mine – as of today.

OK, I’m a bad blogger when it comes to this blog. I have witnessed my Alexa ranking fall millions of spots over the past 6 or 7 months.

Why? Because I broke one of the most important rules of blogging. MAINTAIN consistent posting. As in, if you usually post once a day, then post once a day. If it’s once a week, then post once a week. I’ve been sporadic at best.

But I have a reason (or excuse) for this – however you want to think of it. Life happens. That’s the short of it. The long of it is too many plates in the air.

I also have come to the conclusion that my passion isn’t strong enough with this blog as it’s not a true reflection of me. It’s focus is too narrow – which is usually a good thing when it comes to marketing. Without getting into it, I’ve decided to focus my energy on a new blog, TerrypCarter.com I just started this week.

TerrypCarter.com is an experiment in lifestyle design.. As I learn and grow and discover new interests, so will my blog.

An added twist and major reason for being is I’m going to use everything I’ve learned and continue to learn about making money online to bring the blog from zero to $20,000 per month in income. I just arbitrarily set that. I’ll have lesser goals that’ll be milestones along the way. And I’m certainly not going to put any limits on it.

This is part of the lifestyle design experiment and one of the main reasons why I’ve been doing this MaAM blog et. al. for all this time – to show people how to free themselves from the contstraints of geography and time when it comes to your source of income – a la Timothy Ferriss’s 4 Hour Work Week and others.

So with that said, I encourage you to take a look at my new blog and comment – those linkbacks are going to be really valuable when my blog breaks 100K on alexa

Besides, it’s going to cover a lot more than great internet marketing training, I’m going to share my insights to all the crazy s*** I am into.
